Introduction to Ticks

- Most species of ticks have a two-year life cycle
- Ticks undergo an incomplete metamorphosis (egg, larvae, nymph, adult)

- The ticks we are most concerned with are dog ticks and deer ticks

- Deer ticks are the carriers of Lyme disease
- Ticks are parasites. They feed and transmit disease in all stages of development except the age stage
- After mating, a female tick can lay 4,000 - 7,000 eggs

- Tick eggs hatch within 35-55 days and the larvae seek hosts immediately
- Ticks are excellent disease vectors, meaning they are capable of transferring disease from one organism to another

- The height of activity for the dog tick extends from April to August
- The height of activity for the deer tick extends from April through November
- Adult deer ticks remain active right through the winter if temperatures stay above 40 F
